On September 17, 2006 at 16:07 hours the Iron Mountain Fire Dept. received
a call from IMPD desk Lt. Bill Revord reporting a structure fire at 505 Houghteling.
Engine #1 with a crew of three responded to the call and was on location in
less than four minutes. Upon arrival Lt. Cudnohufsky reported a working fire
in a single family dwelling and ordered a Code 3 call back of off duty firefighters.
Lt. Cudnohufsky took command and continued his initial size-up. Firefighters
were notified by IMPD that the dwelling was unoccupied and vacant.
Firefighters deployed a 1 3/4” cross-lay and prepared the line for entry
through the front door. Firefighters then moved to the rear of the dwelling
to accomplish ventilation prior to entering. Returning to the front of the
dwelling, Engine/Operator deBidart took the nozzle under direction of Lt. Cudnohufsky,
opened the front door and started to enter the dwelling. Just prior to entering
the dwelling, Lt. Cudnohufsky recognized that Engineer Johnson was down the
street establishing a water supply from the hydrant and that two men were not
available for back-up. The order to delay entry was given.
Using the Thermal Imaging Camera, the seat of the fire was located at the rear
of the dwelling in the kitchen area. A fire stream was directed through the
dwelling from the front door knocking down the fire. The “two-out” was
reestablished and the attack team entered the dwelling and completed extinguishing
the fire.
Acting Chief (Lt.) Pirlot and Lt. Lauersdorf responded to the fire and assisted
with overhaul and fire cause/origin. It was determined the fire started in
the basement near an electrical junction box and burned up through the floor
into the kitchen. Fire damage was confined to the basement and kitchen areas
with smoke damage throughout the dwelling.
